Rachel McNicholl is from Galway, on the west coast of Ireland. She studied Modern Languages and Literature in Galway and carried out post-graduate research in Zurich and Hamburg. In her professional life, she has worked in education, journalism, publishing and translation. Her literary translation practice has been supported from time to time by, among others, the Arts Council of Ireland and the Goethe-Institut. In 2016 Rachel was awarded a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant by PEN America, and in 2021 her translation of „The Storyteller“ by Pierre Jarawan (co-translated with Sinéad Crowe) was shortlisted for the Schlegel-Tieck Translation Prize. Her favourite translation projects are novels, short stories, literary essays and children's picture books. She will live at the Künstlerhaus for 11 months.
