Born in Constance at Lake Constance in 1954, Frieder Butzmann (D) was already exploring musical boundaries at a young age, as is evendent in his early work (1969-1972) “Wunderschöne Rückkoppelungen”. While studying music and communication science in the subculturally highly productive Berlin of the late seventies and early eighties, he worked with Throbbing Gristle and their mastermind Genesis P-Orridge and Alexander von Borsig (aka Alex Hacke), Blixa Bargeld, who later became known as Einstürzende Neubauten, and played alongside Gudrun Gut in the “women's band” Liebesgier. From 1981, international appearances in Paris and Vienna with Super 8 film artist Thomas Kiesel. Later often in a duo with the Berlin musician, author and visual artist Thomas Kapielski (Villa Concordia-Fellowship 2017/18). The versatile composer, musician and performer can be considered a pioneer of the German industrial scene. Today he likes to call himself “Crachmacheur”. (Source: Sander Nebeling). Frieder Butzmann will live at the Künstlerhaus from October 2024 until March 2025.
